Forest Bathing brings real benefits

Forest Bathing brings real benefits

There is an undeniable healing power in contact with nature, in feeling the freshness of pure air and the gentle vibration of life that pulses in every leaf, branch and every living being. This is Forest Bathing.

More than a simple walk, this deep sensorial experience is an invitation for us to reconnect with our essence and to rediscover the balance that we often lose in the whirlwind of urban life. Come dive into this oasis of peace and learn more about the concept.

What is Forest Bathing?

The term is the translation of the name of a Japanese therapeutic practice known as Shinrin-yoku,and consists of spending time in deep contact with nature, especially in areas with denser forests and large specimens.

The goal is to absorb the atmosphere of the forest and connect with the environment through the five senses. Contemplation and focus on sounds and aromas help promote physical and mental well-being.

Where and why did Shinrin-yoku appear?

The practice emerged in Japan in the 1980s, created by the local government's Forestry Agency. The objective was to encourage the population to connect more with nature and get to know the forests and green parks close to their homes.

Intense urban growth, increasingly demanding work and longer confinement in rooms and offices, raised a warning to Japanese health authorities that this would be a recipe for increased stress and reduced levels of well-being among the population. A perfect set for an explosion of diseases linked to this lifestyle..

Although the initiative already predicted that this contact would bring benefits to people, the results were even more surprising. Forest Bathing has proven to be an efficient practice in reducing anxiety states and the hormone cortisol – which at high levels can cause chronic stress.

In research carried out in Japan, scientists related the benefits attributed to Forest Bathing not only to the fact that people disconnect from their routines for some time, but also because of organic compounds that are emitted by vegetation, mainly trees.

These substances are called phytocides and serve as a type of natural antibiotic, preventing microorganisms harmful to plants from developing. The great thing was understanding that they are also beneficial to humans when inhaled. See some of the main benefits.

Reduction of stress and anxiety

This direct contact with nature helps reduce cortisol levels, the stress-related hormone, and therefore promotes relaxation.

Improved mood and sleep quality

Immersion in natural environments increases serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that contributes to a feeling of well-being and more restful sleep.

Strengthening the immune system

Inhaling phytocides, combined with reducing cortisol and improving sleep quality, helps to strengthen the body's defenses.

Increased concentration and creativity

The peaceful, quiet environment of the forest helps improve focus and stimulate creativity.

Improved cardiovascular health

Moments of tranquility and immersion in the forest help regulate blood pressure, heart rate and blood circulation.

Promotes physical activity

The practice encourages walking and other physical activities in nature, which contributes to general physical health.

How to do Forest Bathing?

You don't need any special equipment for this practice. Just find a quiet green area, like a park or forest. But it is important to follow some tips.

No electronic devices ‒ turn off or put aside your cell phone and other devices, this way you can focus on the present moment and connect with nature.

Walk slowly and carefully ‒ observe your movements, your breathing, the details of the forest, the trees, the plants, the animals and the sounds of the environment.

Use all your senses ‒ touch the trees, smell the plants, listen to the birds singing and breathe the fresh forest air.

Stay in the present ‒ try to leave everyday worries aside and take advantage of the moment to relax and reconnect with your essence and nature.

In Brazil, there are several places suitable for this practice, such as national parks, forest reserves and even urban green areas. Here at Ronco the immersion is even greater,as our entire structure is nestled in the middle of a large area of preserved Atlantic Forest.

You can contemplate and enjoy the magic of the forest from your suite window or while walking to the pool or restaurant. In addition, there are other activities that also promote direct contact with this peaceful and restorative atmosphere.

Our proposal goes beyond taking care of the forest. As a lodge in the Atlantic Rainforest, we aim to preserve our own species. Also, we encourage the reconnection with nature: just by stepping barefoot on the ground, you are able to feel better the earth and recharge your batteries.

Forest Bathing can be practiced individually, in groups or as a couple, and can be an incredible experience as part of wedding anniversary celebrations, for example.

Staying at Ronco is a total immersion experience in nature. It's breathing in the humid, fragrant air, listening to the sounds of the wind, birdsong and enjoying a quality meal in peace.
